Casino Verification UK 2026: How ID Checks Actually Work
UK casinos are required to verify your identity before you can place a bet. They can usually do this in the background when you first register, but there are times when they will ask you to provide documentation. Here are the rules surrounding ID verification, what casinos typically ask for, and ways to help this process along.
- At sign-upYour name, address and date of birth are checked against databases. Often instant.
- If that failsYou are asked for documents, such as a passport, driving licence or household bill.
- Later, sometimesA selfie if fraud is suspected, or source of funds checks as your play grows.
What the rules say about casino verification in the UK
All UK licensed online casinos must adhere to 17.1.1 of the licensing conditions.
Before you gamble. Casinos have to confirm your identity prior to your first bet. They do this by confirming your name, date of birth and address. They also have to confirm your age and that you are not betting using prohibited or restricted accounts.
Not saved for the withdrawal. Casinos are prohibited from asking for additional ID verification documents if they could have requested those documents in the past. The only exception to this is if they are required by law to request those documents at that specific time, for example to comply with Money Laundering regulations.
Told in advance. Prior to you making a deposit, the casino must inform you of the ID verification documents that may be required, when they may be required, and how you may provide those documents to the casino.
Kept up to date. The casino must take reasonable steps to keep your details accurate. That is why moving house can trigger a request.
How casino ID verification works in practice
Excerpts from the Commission’s guide.
- 1Electronic check
In order to confirm your age and identity, the casino will cross-check the information you have provided against other third-party sources.
- 2Documents
If there is a mismatch, they request copies. Passports and utility bills are among the examples given. It is not clear which documents a casino is obliged to accept. Each casinos accepts its own documents.
- 3A selfie
They request proof of identity when they suspect fraudulent activities, for instance if a person opens an account with someone else’s identity.
- 4Waiting
The Commission does not define a time frame. Electronic verification is nearly instant. Verification of documents may take a long time. You are not allowed to bet until your account is verified. Therefore, a casino has every reason to verify your account as quickly as possible.
Casino verification at nine UK casinos we review
Checks are done, according to a casino’s terms and conditions.
| Casino | When | What the casino says |
|---|---|---|
| BetVictor | Before any withdrawal | Every payment method must be in your own name, and the account verified before a withdrawal. |
| BetMGM | Before a withdrawal is approved | Lists pending verification among the common reasons a withdrawal is held, and may also ask about source of funds. |
| BoyleSports | At sign-up, and when asked | Asks you to verify your account, including a selfie if requested. |
| Casumo | Extra checks on larger payouts | Extra verification can apply to a single payout over £1,000 or total withdrawals over £2,000. |
| Duelz | At any time; over £2,000 deposited | Can ask for ID, proof of address, the payment method, a selfie with ID and proof of income. |
| Grosvenor | Before the first withdrawal | Nothing leaves the account until the first verification checks are complete (terms 7.3). |
| kwiff | At sign-up, and when needed | Phone and email are verified at registration; further checks aimed to finish within 24 hours. |
| LiveScore | Before withdrawals | Nothing is paid out while verification requests are outstanding. |
| MrQ | When a withdrawal is flagged | Lists "withdrawals on hold for verification" among the reasons a payout can take longer. |
The pattern is the same everywhere: the first withdrawal is when unfinished checks catch up with you. Complete verification when you sign up, not when you want to cash out. It is the single biggest thing standing between you and a fast withdrawal.
Your verified date of birth also sets your maximum slot stake: £2 a spin until you turn 25, then £5, under the online slot stake limits.
How to get documents accepted first time
Uploads are rejected for a number of reasons. The main reasons are poor quality, and incomplete or incorrect documents.
- All four corners in view
The entire document should be clear and should not contain glare.
- In date and matching
When a person moves to a new house, your account should be updated before you can send documents with your new address.
- Your own payment method
Your name must be on all cards and wallets, including PayPal (refer to PayPal casinos for related PayPal rules). Obscure the middle numbers of the card, and never provide the security code.
- Through the casino's own upload page
Support should be contacted to confirm file acceptance if there is concern about an email or text.

Why a "no verification" casino is a warning sign
If no ID check is offered, no license will be granted.
Every online casino operating under the U.K. Gambling Commission has this condition. Any online casino that permits play without ID check is, by default, an unlicensed and unregulated casino. Money played at such sites is at risk and protection of funds will not apply. This is among the red flag conditions detailed in our Online Casino Scams guide.
A casino may use a third-party company for ID checks, and this will satisfy the Commission’s requirements. However, it is the casino’s ultimate responsibility to ensure that all checks are satisfied.
Checks that can come after verification
Verification is only required once for initial funds. Further transfers and withdrawals may require additional checks.
ID Verification is done to authenticate your identity. According to the Money Laundering Laws, the source of your funds has to be verified once your transactions go over the 2,000 GBP threshold. Also, as part of the safer gambling controls, Financial Assessment checks may be conducted on your deposits. It is important to note that ID Verification and the other checks we mentioned above, are different and may be carried out independently of each other. The other checks can come later, sometimes at the point of withdrawal.
If you think a casino held a withdrawal for ID it should have asked for at sign-up, say so in a complaint and quote licence condition 17.1.1. Our casino complaints guide shows how.
