Deposit Limits UK 2026: How They Work and What Changes Now

Rachel DoughtyRachel Doughty Updated

Currently, licensed casinos in Britain have deposit limits that cap the amount a player can deposit over a particular period. These limits can be set on a day-to-day, week-to-week or month-to-month basis. All licensed casinos in Britain provide these deposit limits. We explain some changes that will be effective from 30 September 2026, how deposit limits work and what deposit limits, if any, are provided by 10 select casinos.

  • 30 Sept2026, when the new deposit limit rules apply
  • 24 hoursthe least a casino must wait before raising a limit
  • At oncewhen a lower limit must take effect
  • 6 monthshow often you must be reminded to review your account

Deposit limits UK: what changes on 30 September 2026

The second phase of the Commission’s rules concerning gambling management tools has been postponed from 30 June 2026.

  • Every casino must offer gross limits

A gross deposit limit means all amounts deposited, regardless of whether amounts have been withdrawn. Any casino that previously offered a gross deposit limit will have to provide this limit to consumers once again.

  • Only gross limits keep the name

A limit on the total amount deposited is the only true deposit limit. All other limits should be called something different.

  • At least as easy to find

A true deposit limit, a limit on the total amount deposited, should be provided with the same prominence as any other limit.

  • Fixed time frames

A true deposit limit should be provided for a definite, fixed period. Any other limit can be provided for a definite, fixed period or on a continuous or rolling basis.

Deposit limits UK: Gambling Commission notice of 26 May 2026 on the new deposit limit rules from 30 September 2026
The Commission's notice of 26 May 2026, moving the start date to 30 September.

A true deposit limit of say £100 means consumers can not deposit more than £100. If consumers place a bet with a £100 outcome and win, the consumer can withdraw £200. The net limit of £100 means consumers can deposit again. The Commission wants all gaming operators to provide consumers with a true deposit limit, before any other limit.

The kinds of casino limit, and what each one counts

According to the Commission, there should be three money limits. Operators can set additional limits.

Deposit limit
The total you can pay in over the period. From 30 September 2026, only this kind can use the name.
Net deposit limit
Deposits minus withdrawals. Useful, but it resets whenever you cash out, so it can let more money in.
Spend limit
The total you can stake over the period, whether you win or lose.
Loss limit
What you spend minus what you win. You can keep playing while you are ahead.
Session limit
A cap on time. The casino logs you out or stops play when it runs out.
Reality check
A reminder at the interval you choose, showing how long you have played. You must acknowledge it before your next game.

The limit set by law is the only cap you can’t adjust. The law states that a single spin of the reels can’t cost more than £5 (or £2 if you’re under 25). To learn more about stake limits in online slots, click here.

Setting more than one deposit limit: the lowest one wins

The example comes from the Commission’s own technical standards.

  1. Weekly limit you set£100
  2. Most you can deposit in 7 days at £10 a day£70
  3. Most you can deposit in any one day£10

Set a £10 daily limit and a £100 weekly limit, and the daily limit does the work. Seven days at £10 is £70, so you can never reach the weekly £100. Whichever limit is tighter over any period is the one that applies.

A monthly limit isn’t as effective as a daily limit, because a monthly limit allows you to make one single large payment at the start of the month.

How to raise or lower a deposit limit

The rules acknowledge this by treating the two limits differently.

  • LowerTakes effect immediatelyA casino must apply a decrease at once, unless a technical failure stops it.
  • RaiseAt least 24 hours, then you confirmAfter a cooling-off of at least 24 hours, you must take positive action to confirm the new limit. It does not rise on its own.

The cooling-off gives you a day to change your mind. If you do nothing when it ends, the old limit stays. Removing a limit altogether counts as raising it, so the same wait applies.

Deposit limits: questions

What is a deposit limit at a UK casino?

This caps how much you can pay into your account in a given period (i.e. a day, week, month). All British casinos must create and offer these limits. You will be asked to set a limit before making your first deposit.

What changes for deposit limits on 30 September 2026?

A limit set on the total amount of money you deposit over a given period (i.e. a day, week, month). These limits must be displayed and made available to you before you start play.

What is the difference between a gross and a net deposit limit?

A limit that is placed on the total amount of deposits. A limit that is placed on the total amount of deposits, less the total amount of withdrawals. A gross limit is the firmer limit.

How long does it take to increase a deposit limit?

At a minimum, you must wait 24 hours before increasing the limit. If you want to decrease the limit, you can do that immediately.

Do deposit limits apply across different casinos?

Usually, a limit will only apply to the casinos operated by a single entity. The BetMGM group limits will apply across the LeoVegas group sites. To block all sites operated by licensed UK casinos, use GamStop.

Can I remove a deposit limit?

Yes, however, you will have to wait 24 hours to remove the limit and you will have to confirm the limit is removed.
